Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 20–50 m tall.

Stems: Bark white, gray, or bluish gray, smooth throughout.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate, 10–20 cm long, 1–2.7 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades concolorous. Margins entire. Petioles 13–24 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7–11 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles 7–25 mm long, pedicels 3–10 mm long. buds conical, 10–16 mm long, 4–6 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovules with axile placentation.

Fruit: Fruit subglobose or ovoid; 5–7 mm long; 4–8 mm wide; valves 4–5; exserted. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Extensively planted on Kaua'i; O'ahu; Molokai; Maui; and Hawai'i; and regenerating from seed at least within or near the plantations.
